The Germ Theory

The Germ Theory

There was a time when it was thought that the cause of disease was poisonous air. Up until the 1800s they thought poisonous vapors that were made of rotten matter were the reason people were getting sick and this bad air could be identified by its foul odor. Doctors during the plague outbreak wore masks with a flower scent to avoid getting sick. This was called the Miasma Theory. It may sound silly to us now, but at the time this theory was widely accepted by the public and medical community so much so that it took much persuading and evidence-based research to prove it was false and for the Germ Theory to rise in its place. According to the Germ Theory, microscopic pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites) invade the human body causing disease. However, could it be that we have now out grown the Germ Theory as well? Let’s think about this, the Black Plague caused the death of nearly a third of the European population, however, two-thirds of the population didn’t die. Many of the survivors were members of the same family as the victims, sharing a home and meals. Why didn’t they get sick? Was it luck? Top Palm Harbor chiropractor explains!

Strengthening Your Immune System

There is no denying that the plague was caused by a bacteria called Yersinia pestis. However, the development of the disease inside the body is more complex than just coming in contact with germs. Nowadays, people are so scared of germs that they will do anything to avoid contact with them. Which is impossible! There are germs everywhere no matter what we do. Furthermore, studies have shown that kids that play outdoors and come in contact with more germs build stronger immune systems. There are trillions of microorganisms living on our skin and inside of us which actually play a vital role in our health. Research is revealing how the microbiome plays an important role in digestion, regulating the immune system, protecting against disease and manufacturing vital vitamins. So, it comes down to how well your body is functioning, how well your brain and body are communicating to allow you to adapt to the ever-changing environment around you.
